How does the NBA draft work?
I'm just watching a bunch of these old drafts with MJ, Reggie Miller, Kobe...and sometimes they'd show people on the phone. Is it like an auction where people call in and whichever team makes the highest offer takes takes the player? Does it all happen in one day, or there are months of preparation for it? Sorry if it sounds like a silly question, but I just started to really pay attention to basketball. Before I'd just watch and not pay attention to the rules, just purely for entertainment. But ever since the finals, I've been hooked, and I just want to learn more about it. Enough about me.
So how does the NBA draft work? Could you tell me the basics?

In simpler terms, because i don't understand every aspect of it, players who feel they are ready for the Draft apply to be in the Draft. Then the "lottery" happens, where the teams, with the worst record having the best odds of winning, on up to the best team, get the their chances put into a lottery to see who gets the first pick, second pick, etc. Then the draft happens on one day. The team who got the first pick then decides who they want, and calls them. That's why you see them on the phone. Then it goes to the second team, and keeps going through i think 6 rounds.
