Ever wonder why a new performer becoming a hit is such news? That’s because it really happens very, very rarely. When you compare the number of young actors, dancers, or musicians who get their "break" against all who fail, you’ll soon see the odds are a lot greater than winning a TV show talent competition.

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) will certainly back this up. One way they support young actors learn their craft is through two different scholarship programs. The first is the John L. Dales Standard Scholarship. To apply, a student must be under 22 years old and already be a member of the actor’s union (which means having worked professionally). He or she must also write an essay and provide two letters of recommendation. If the actor survives this and the audition, he or she gets a $4,000 award.
The other program is the Transitional Scholarship. This works more like a fellowship, being open only to professionals who have been in the business for at least 10 years or earned over $150,000 as an actor. Another big supporter of performers is the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC). Its Heineken USA Performing Arts Scholarship is open to musicians, dancers, actors, and any other performers, as long as they are full-time college students maintaining a 2.5 GPA. Recipients are awarded a scholarship of $3,000 per year. They also administer their Visual Arts scholarship, which is also for $3,000. The purpose of this scholarship is to assist those creative types who work behind the camera as opposed to in front of it. Again, it is only open to full-time students with a 2.5 grade point average.
The late Michael Jackson also financed a scholarship before he passed away. It is open to not only performers, but also to English and Communications majors. Here, they must carry a 3.0 grade point average to qualify. Yet if they do, they will receive a scholarship of up to $5,000 a year.

It is open to just about every kind of performer there is and also offers a number of different prizes for each group, from first to honorary.
